The Apple Watch is already a powerful tool for runners, and watchOS 9 brings more data and features to help users track how efficiently they're running.

New running form metrics, including stride length, ground contact time and vertical oscillation, can all be added as metrics in the workout view.

These metrics are displayed in the Fitness app Summary and Health app, where users can see trends and learn from patterns over time.

A new Pacer experience allows users to choose a distance and goal at which they want to complete a run and calculates the pace needed to achieve the goal.

During workouts, they can follow provided pace alerts and metrics. Coming later this year, Race Route enables users to race against their best or last results on frequently completed routes and receive in-session pacing guidance.

A new track running experience, coming to the US later this year, automatically detects when users are on a running track and uses Apple Maps data with GPS to provide ultimate speed and distance metrics for runners.
