A recent norovirus outbreak aboard Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam cruise ship has left over 80 passengers and crew members sick. The outbreak affected 74 guests out of the 1,923 aboard and four crew members during a voyage that began on December 4, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Common symptoms included vomiting and diarrhea, though the cases were reportedly mild and quickly resolved.

In response to the outbreak, Holland America implemented enhanced sanitation protocols to curb the spread of the virus. According to a spokesperson, the measures were enacted in coordination with the CDC. “Upon arrival in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, the ship will undergo additional and comprehensive sanitization before embarking on its next voyage,” the spokesperson said in an emailed statement to USA TODAY. Guests were informed of updated boarding times to accommodate the extensive disinfection process.
The cruise line also took immediate steps to isolate sick guests and crew members to minimize further transmission, following CDC guidelines.
